The season of coughs and colds is here, and cough drops are a handy remedy to have around the house. However, store-bought cough drops often contain sugar, flavorings, and dyes, which are ingredients many of us want to avoid. On the other hand, homemade honey cough drops contain only whole food ingredients. And unlike many store-bought cough drops, these easy honey cough drops don’t just provide symptom relief; they actually help to boost your immune system and shorten the life of your cold. Homemade coconut oil and honey cough drops are easy to make and will help to ease the symptoms of a cough or sore throat naturally. In addition, homemade cold remedies are often significantly cheaper than their store-bought counterparts.
Honey is one of my go-to remedies for colds. It soothes sore throats and it is an effective cough suppressant as well. Over-the-counter medications are not effective in children under six, and they may even have health risks, but honey is safe and effective for the whole family over age one. (Never give a child under a year old honey because of the risk of infant botulism). Unlike over-the-counter cold and cough medicines, honey is a frugal choice, and it’s an ingredient most people keep in their cupboard, so it’s quick and easy to use.
Coconut Oil Benefits
Regular consumption of coconut oil can help to boost the immune system. A healthy immune system means fewer colds. Even if you do get a cold, a healthy immune system means your body will be in a better position to fight the cold off quickly. Once a cold has set in, coconut oil can also help alleviate many symptoms and will help support your immune system to shorten the life of the cold. Coconut oil also has the bonus of being a frugal cold medicine choice because it’s an item most people have on hand.
Honey and coconut oil together make a wonderful remedy for cough and cold symptoms. Cough drops are nice because they are convenient for using whether at home or on the go. These honey cough drops are easy to make because they need only two ingredients and they taste delicious. As an added bonus, they are inexpensive to make.
Homemade Honey Cough Drops*
- 1 C raw, organic honey
- 2 T organic coconut oil
- Silicone mini ice cube mold (or other small mold)
- Heat honey and coconut over medium heat until they reach 300 degrees.
- Quickly pour into mold.
- Let sit until hardened.
- Pop out of the mold. The cough drops can be a bit sticky, so we wrap them in parchment paper to keep them from sticking together.
